Weekends are the easiest time for me to dive into a larger decluttering project, but sometimes I have too much scheduled and find I only have a few chunks of time here and there to go through spaces in my home.Ā If this sounds familiar, check out these 8 spaces that always seem to have some clutter you can get through pretty quickly.
I tend to do the bulk of my decluttering on the weekends when I can really dive into larger projects or areas and take my time with sorting, donating and discarding items. Sometimes, the weekend just isnāt long enough for a larger decluttering session when life hands you the unexpected.
Take for instance this past weekend, when four out of five of us in the house were sickā¦you know that kind of sick where you donāt feel awful enough to be in bed all day, but donāt feel well enough to do anything besides sit around eitherā¦
On those weekends in particular I like to make sure I get in just a little bit of purging by hitting one of my āgo-toā spots that seem to always need a little bit of sorting and discarding.
Whether you declutter on the weekend, in the evenings or whenever suits you best, if you are running short on time but still want to get it done, try one or two of these hot spots to cut through some clutter.
Declutter your fridge, freezer or pantry.
These areas can always use a 10-minute decluttering session to find old condiments, canned and boxed food items that are expired or should be donated before they get there. Decluttering the freezer is great, as you can make a quick list of frozen main entrĆ©e items that can be used/decluttered the following week for dinners.Ā Check out this post on decluttering your pantry if that suits you better.
Declutter under your bathroom or kitchen sinks.
One of my go to spots is under my bathroom sink. It never fails that I find an extra deodorant I bought when they were on sale or nail polish that has dried up and a tube of lotion I thought I could squeeze one more drop out of.
Declutter your sewing kit or toolbox.
Iām not sure how many spools of crĆØme colored thread I have, but more than is necessary, thatās for sure.Ā Ā Decluttering my sewing box gives me a good idea of what I have in stock, what duplicates I need to get rid of and gives me inspiration to finish any projects I started but havenāt finished. If youāre a guy, or a handy girl (I wish), declutter your toolbox as well.
Declutter your closet shelves.
Iām not sure about you, but right now in my sonās closet I have a large glass drink dispenser, a stack of old beach towels, skiing gear we used once and some wire baskets I put in there six months ago that I was sure I was going to use. A lot of time, my 10 minute weekend decluttering sessions involve 8 minutes of hemming and hawing over my internal excuses for keeping stuff, and 2 minutes of actual decluttering and putting them in the trunk for the next trip to the thrift store.
Declutter your household paperwork.
I think we all have either a desk, corkboard or designated spot where we put our kidās art, notices from school, mail that needs to be opened or bills to be paid. It may contain your nieceās recent wedding announcement or one of those guilt-inducing cookie dough fundraiser packets from your childās soccer team. Sit down for ten minutes and go through it, get what you can done and leave the rest until your next decluttering session.
Declutter your email.
This one can definitely take longer than 10 minutes, but will be well worth the effort. Take a few minutes and UNSUBSCRIBE from email advertisements, donāt just send them to the trash. Respond to the top three most important emails and discard all emails that threaten you with not being a real friend if you donāt share or promise you millions of dollars from some long lost relative.
Declutter your cosmetics.
As females, we hate the thought of tossing unused, expensive cosmetics in the trash, but they do have a shelf life and most of the time they reach it before we have used them up. Do your face a favor and declutter and discard out of date cosmetics. I even created this handy date keeper to help keep them decluttered in the future.
Declutter your car.
The car is a great hotspot for a quick decluttering session. Pull out old water bottles, bits of trash, that empty coffee cup from earlier in the week and your umbrella. While youāre in there, check out the dates on your insurance and registration cards to make sure they are valid.
Doing a little decluttering on the weekends gives me a boost for the upcoming week, even if it is doing a little that keeps me in the habit of getting rid of unused items on a regular basis. If youāre short on time, tackle one of these declutter spots and make some quick progress!
