This Fourth of July was our first here in Georgia. We are only about 30 minutes from historic downtown Savannah, so this year we decided to join the festivities they have on River Street, ending the evening with a wonderful fireworks display. We arrived around 4pm and parked in a public garage, then set off on foot to explore. WE walked through Franklin Square, already filled with people chatting, enjoying the food from local vendors and listening to music in the City Market area.
We made our way to the waterfront, stopping and perusing some art shops as we went. I was surprised and happy at how interested the kids actually were to look at the different pieces produced by the local artists. I have my sights set on a photograph on canvas by Carrie Kellogg, ‘Beyond the Fog’. Once on River Street, it got fairly crowded with people, vendors, jumping castles and loud music. Still, it 
was really neat walking down the cobblestone streets taking everything in. We stopped and bought some frosted honey, olive bruschetta and horseradish mustard from a couple of stores, and of course some Italian ices for the kids. It was 91 degrees out, so those were a perfect treat for them!
We eventually met up with one of my husband’s co-workers and her nephews, which was a welcome addition to our group. The kids kept each other entertained while we continued to walk around. We were able to get in for dinner at one of the restaurants on the boardwalk, Huey’s on the River. We enjoyed some great southern food, in particular shrimp and grits and brussell sprouts with bacon. As if the day couldn’t be planned any better, as soon as we finished dinner and walked outside, the fireworks began lighting up over the Savannah River.
The show was short, but beautiful watching the reflection of the lights on the river. We headed home tired and full of another great experience and family memory.
